Peter the Great
Peter the Great was born as Peter Alexeyevich Romonv on June 9, 1672 in Moscow, Russia. He was the 14th child of the Czar Alexis and Natalya Kirillovna. When his father died Peter and his brother Ivan ruled together till Ivan died then Peter took complete rule as sovereign of all Russia in 1696. Russia was severely underdeveloped compared to all the European countries that were going through the Renaissance and reformation while Russia rejected westernization. Russia remained isolated from modernization. Peter tried to reestablish Russia by taking extensive reform. He initiated a series of changes by making a navy, he reorganized his army to western standards, secularized schools, he administered greater control over the reactionary Orthodox Church, and he administrative and territorial divisions of the country.
Peter wanted to manly focus on the development of science. He did this by recruiting several experts to educate his people about technological advancements. He created a bourgeoisie population by concentrating on developing commerce and industry. He wanted to be more like western culture so he modernized the Russian alphabet, he also introduced the Julian calendar, and he made the first Russian newspaper. He wanted to make a better government so he abolished Russia’s archaic government and made a viable senate that regulated all branches of administration, he also made groundbreaking accomplishments in Russia’s foreign policy.
Peter gained territory all throughout his reign. He gained land in Estonia, Latvia, and Finland. He also made access to the Black Sea in 1709. He defeated the Swedish army by drawing them to the city of Poltva during an unbearable winter. He then made St. Petersburg the new capital of Russia. St. Petersburg is also known as Russia’s “window to Europe”.
Peter proclaimed Russia as an Empire and was now known as Emperor of all Russia, or as Great Father of the Fatherland. He was a very good leader but was also a cruel and tyrannical man. He was handsome but drank a lot and did a lot of violent tendencies. He had eleven children, but many died an infant, and his oldest child was secretly executed in 1718 for high treason by his father. Peter Alexeyevich Romanov died on February 8th, 1725 with no heir.
